Resumo

This paperwork investigates the importance of prosody and visual cues to the perception of (im)politeness. We assume the perspective presented by [1], who claims that politeness is usually unmarked, resulting from generalized implicatures, while impoliteness is a marked behaviour. To pursue our aim, we develop a case study of ten dialogues extracted from the reality show Hell´s Kitchen Brasil (season 4). The hostess´s utterances are examined for correlations between the presence of some melodic/visual cues and the expression of (im)politeness. Our results point out the importance of melodic variation (F0 mean, F0 range) to the assessment of (im)politeness. Our study also suggests visual cues are relevant, especially to the perception of impoliteness.
