Abstract


APredicaçãoCarlos FranchiUnicamp/Uspnoção de predicação é central na teoria lingüística desde asprimeiras reflexões sobre a linguagem. Entretanto, têm-seusado as noções de predicação, predicável, predicado (eseus correlatos argumento, sujeito) sob condições definitórias e emcontextos teóricos tão distintos, que não se está livre de inextricáveisembaraços e confusões mesmo entre lingüistas e filósofos dosmelhores.1 Reitero que a noção de Predicação a definir me interessacomo conceito do componente semântico de uma teoria gramatical.Convém, pois, explicitar com a maior precisão possível o sentido emque a devo empregar e qual o seu suporte intuitivo.Neste capítulo, depois de uma rápida revisão de algumasconcepções de predicação (em 1), pretendo examinar (em 2) a querelações sintáticas a relação de predicação se estende como correlatosemântico, para formular, em seus traços mais gerais, uma noçãolingüística de Predicação em (3). Cuido de caracterizá-la semanticamente,como relativa às representações (ao sentido) que medeiama interpretação das expressões das línguas naturais e, grosso modo,as associam a indivíduos, propriedades, estados e eventos nouniverso do discurso.
