A latinidade do léxico romeno pela lista de Swadesh// The latinity of the Romanian lexicon by means of Swadesh’s list

Resumo

Resumo: Este artigo visa a apresentar a latinidade do romeno por meio da Lista de Swadesh, que reúne de 100 a 200 itens lexicais do vocabulário básico de uma língua qualquer, com o intuito de identificar possíveis parentescos linguísticos. Embora a filiação do romeno à família românica seja hoje indiscutível, as suas feições peculiares o fazem parecer, à primeira vista, um idioma muito apartado da realidade neolatina. No entanto, por meio da análise etimológica dos cerca de 100 itens lexicais aqui listados, chega-se à conclusão de que o léxico romeno primitivo não só é fortemente latino, como também possui muitas palavras em comum com as línguas românicas ocidentais. Com efeito, 90% dos itens arrolados têm origem latina, demonstrando que o vocabulário básico de uma língua é, de fato, mais resistente a empréstimos. Os cognatos românicos nem sempre são tão óbvios porque certos fenômenos fonéticos típicos da história do romeno podem ter alterado drasticamente a forma dos vocábulos, tornando-os às vezes irreconhecíveis.

Abstract: This article aims to present Latinity of the Romanian language by means of the Swadesh’s List, which gathers from 100 to 200 lexical items of the basic vocabulary of a certain language, in order to identify possible linguistic kinship. Although the Romanian’s affiliation to the Romance family is nowadays unquestionable, its peculiar features make it seem, at first glance, a language far apart from neolatin reality. However, through the etymological analysis of the approximately 100 lexical items here listed, it is concluded that the early Romanian lexicon is not only strongly Latin-based but also has many words in common with Western Romance languages. As a result, 90% of the listed items has Latin origin, demonstrating that the basic vocabulary of a language is, in fact, more resistant to borrowing. Romance cognates are not always that obvious because certain phonetic phenomena typical of Romanian history may have drastically altered the shape of the words, making them sometimes unrecognizable.
