Abstract: This article aims to analyze the work La casa de los espíritus (House of spirits), by Isabel Allende. It considers the arrival of Alba (the narrator) to the prison and her torture by the dictatorship. There, inside a despair, she sees her life about to disappear. Her salvation resides in the contact with her friend Ana Díaz and the spirit of her grandmother Clara, who persuades her to survive and give her testimony. The main argument is to think about this image of the torture of a young woman, her imminent death and the new meanings about the need to survive and testify the horror. For that we consider Gagnebin’s theoretical base (2006), with the amplification of the testimony; Rosa (2013), with important contributions about the meetings that increase or decrease the individual’s potency; as well as Sarlo (2007), Todorov (2008) and Seligmann-Silva (2003 about the task of the testimony in times of exception. We conclude that the testimony is fundamental in moments of violence of State, to avoid the repetition of the horror.
Keywords: dictatorship; Chile; testimony; Isabel Allende.
